Legal Information Services | Contra Costa Senior Legal Services

Provides free legal services for Contra Costa seniors age 60+ including advice, counsel and representation in civil legal matters, such as: elder abuse, consumer matters, housing, income maintenance as well as advance health care directives and durable power of attorney. Special Free Wills Clinic and Consult-an-Attorney Programs conducted at selected Senior Centers throughout the County; Pro Bono Program conducted to assist in placing eligible clients with private attorneys where possible. Contra Costa Senior Legal Services does not provide assistance in Criminal Law, Family Law (with the exception of elder abuse), Immigration Law, Personal Injury, Probate or Tax matters. Provides legal information and provides presentations to community groups Advance Health Care Directives, Powers of Attorney, and Prevention of Elder Abuse.

Education Volunteer Opportunities | Project Second Chance - Adult Literacy Program - San Pablo

Provides free, confidential, one-on-one basic instruction in reading, writing, and spelling to adults who can converse in English. Instruction is provided by trained volunteers. Adult learner/tutor pairs meet twice a week, for an hour and a half each time at libraries or other public locations throughout Contra Costa County. Trains volunteer tutors three times per year. Peer Counseling | Independent Living Resource (ILR) - Pittsburg

Provides information, referrals, assistance, understanding and hope to persons of all ages with disabilities as well as elderly individuals for the purpose of helping them to live as independently as possible. Services include: advocacy, benefits assistance, housing assistance, employment services, peer counseling services, assistance with independent educational planning (IEPs for school-aged youth), life skills, ADA information, public & businesses education. Referrals and resources are provided for: assistive technology, agencies serving the disabled, transportation, and youth programs. Advocacy services to increase access to services, benefits, and other social services and advising clients regarding their rights. Housing referral services assist clients by maintaining a registry of accessible, adaptable, affordable apartments and houses. Peer counseling is available to disabled individuals, their families, and friends. In depth individual skills development can be provided within the peer-counseling group or on a one-to-one basis. A small lending library of equipment is available.

Provides adoption referral service for those who need to place or want to adopt a dog and/or a cat. Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP), provides low-cost veterinary clinic referrals, pet-friendly rentals list. Offers advice and referrals to low-cost veterinarians. Serves as the investigative unit responsible for determining the cause and manner of death on all deaths in Contra Costa County. Medicolegal death investigations are conducted throughout the county on homicides, suicides, accidents, suspicious and unexpected deaths. Other duties include, notifying the next of kin, safeguarding personal property, collection of evidence, processing death certificates and overseeing indigent burials.
